During the difficult time of losing someone, you will need to let different government organisations know - including your local councils.
You can use the Tell Us Once service to report a death to most government organisations in one go.
Registering a death
Before using the Tell Us Once service, you will need to register the death.
During the appointment, the Registrar will give you a unique reference number and advise you about how to use the service.
Register a death with Hertfordshire County Council
You must use the Tell Us Once service within 28 days of getting your unique reference number.
Tell Us Once
The Government's Tell Us Once service will tell your local council about a number of services, including:
- Council tax and support
- Electoral services
- Housing Benefit
Tell Us Once will also contact other organisation, such as:
- Passport Service
- Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
- His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
- Public Sector Pension Services
The Government website will also recommend other services you do need to contact seperately.
