Apply for alcohol and entertainment licences

Premises licence - amendments

If you want to amend your premises licence you will need to apply for either:

  • a minor variation
  • a full variation

Whether you need to apply for a minor or a full variation depends on the impact on the licensing objectives, which are:

  • public safety
  • the prevention of crime and disorder
  • the prevention of public nuisance
  • the protection of children from harm

If you are planning to make significant changes to your premises, such as extending the licensable area, or if you are changing the nature of your business you will need to apply for a new premises licence.

Make a minor variation

If your change would not affect the licensing objectives you can apply for a minor variation. For example, if you want to:

  • make minor changes to the structure or layout of the premises
  • make small adjustments to licensing hours (but not extend the hours for the sale of alcohol)
  • remove out of date or irrelevant conditions or add extra conditions
  • add certain licensable activities (for example, adding recorded music to an existing premises licence if other activities are already allowed at that time)

The fee for this type of amendment is:

  • £89

You can make a minor variation online at GOV.UK using the button below. The form is an editable online document and will work best using the Internet Explorer browser. It will not work on handheld devices or mobile phones.

Make a full variation

For any change that would affect the licensing objectives, you must apply for a full variation. For example, if you want to:

  • extend the opening hours of the premises
  • make major changes to the premises or change the layout of the bar area (if you extending the licensable area you will need to apply for a new premises licence)
  • add another licensable activity
  • increase the number of hours that alcohol may be sold on any day

The fee for this type of amendment depends on the rateable value of the premises and the cost is the same as for a new application. You will also incur the same additional associated costs, such as advertising the variation.
