National Lockdown measures in England

Statement by the Leader of the Council on the national lockdown measures

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday that there will be a further national lockdown, I urge all members of the public to adhere to the rules and restrictions in place in order to suppress the virus.

This is not a situation that we wanted to find ourselves in once more. I know how difficult the previous full lockdown was for residents and businesses, families and young people.

This step is necessary to reduce the pressure on the NHS. Critical care units in the Hertfordshire NHS Trusts, and that of the Princess Alexandra Trust across the border in Essex are becoming full with COVID-19 patients, and are dangerously close to being overwhelmed.

Only leave your home for essential purposes. These include for work when you cannot work from home, for essential shopping, medical appointments and exercise once per day. The full guidance can be found on GOV.UK.

The vaccination programme for Borough residents is underway in line with the Government’s priority list. Whilst this is fantastic news, and a great breakthrough in the fight against the virus, we cannot afford to become complacent. It is down to each and every one of us to play our part, take responsibility for our actions and do what we can to keep ourselves and others safe.

Stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.
