Successful Levelling Up Fund bid set to regenerate Waltham Cross

Following a bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, the Borough of Broxbourne has been awarded £14.3million to fund the regeneration of Waltham Cross town centre.

The Council’s bid was one of 111 awarded funding out of 529 applications.

One of the Council’s key priorities is to transform Waltham Cross town centre into a place where people want to live, visit and work. As part of a comprehensive wider renaissance programme, there are three related and complementary projects within the heart of the local community which will be funded by the Levelling Up Fund award.

Improvements to the public realm of Waltham Cross town centre, which have been designed in consultation with local residents, visitors and businesses, will transform the heart of the town. Improved pedestrian and cycle access, plus a more modern look and feel, is expected to improve trade for existing shops and businesses and provide a more attractive and vibrant environment for new businesses to set up.

Enhancing the community hub and skills training centre, which lies in the heart of the town centre, will increase footfall and improve job prospects for local people. More people each year will be able to access skills training provided at the hub, helping them to benefit from the new jobs that will be created at nearby developments, such as the Sunset Waltham Cross Studios.

Improvements to Waltham Cross playing fields, including the addition of a new skate bowl, refurbishment of the sports pavilion and new outdoor gym equipment, aim to improve the health and well-being of the local community.

Councillor Lewis Cocking, Leader of Broxbourne Council said:

“I am absolutely delighted that the Borough has been awarded this funding. The improvements that can be made as a result of this funding will further enable local people to take advantage of the existing and new jobs being created close to the town centre and encourage people to be more active and lead healthier lives.

“I truly believe that this funding is a fantastic opportunity to make Waltham Cross town centre a great place to live work and visit.”

Work to enhance the community and skills hub in the town centre is expected to start in the next few months, with work on the public realm and improvements to Waltham Cross playing fields expected to start later this year. A Town Centre Manager, who will be leading many of these improvements, will start in March.
