Street Art Transformation for Waltham Cross Underpass is complete

Broxbourne Borough Council, in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council (HCC), has completed improvement works to the underpass in Waltham Cross.

The enhancements include large-scale mural artwork, commissioned from renowned street art collective MurWalls and Customised Unique. The designs aim to reflect the area’s heritage, community pride and future aspirations.

Each underpass features a distinct theme:

  • Tunnel 1 (linking the town centre) celebrates the rich history of Waltham Cross
  • Tunnel 2 (leading to the Lee Valley White Water Centre) honours the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games, which brought the only Olympic venue to Hertfordshire
  • Tunnel 3 (connecting to the national rail station and recently upgraded park) highlights the area’s newly regenerated recreational spaces, including state-of-the-art gym equipment, a skatepark, DJ booth and interactive sports facilities – a unique provision for older children and teenagers.

This project marks the first major upgrade to the underpasses since before the 2012 Olympics and is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Councillor Steve Wortley, Deputy leader and Cabinet member for Economic Development and Growth said:

“This project brings together heritage, creativity, and investment in community spaces. It’s an important part of the wider regeneration of Waltham Cross, which residents will see completed in full in autumn 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to the artists, whose exceptional talent and high standard of work have greatly contributed to its success. It was a true pleasure to meet them."

Mark Doran, Executive Director of Growth and Environment at Hertfordshire County Council said:

“This is another great example of us working in partnership to improve subways in the county, so that residents can feel safe in opting for more sustainable methods of transport, like walking or getting the bus. If we all swapped just one short car journey a week to travel more actively, this could have a significant impact on our ambition to create a cleaner, greener and healthier county. My sincere thanks to all involved in this fantastic project.”

The regeneration project is a key step in delivering a more welcoming and engaging environment for both residents and visitors.

An official opening event, which took place on Thursday 15 May, was attended by the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Patsy Spears, the Leader of Broxbourne Council, Corina Gander, Councillors Steve Wortley, Paul Mason, John Perkins, Carol Bowman and Selina Norgrove as well as representatives from Hertfordshire County Council, Broxbourne Council, the Lee Valley White Water Centre and MurWalls.
