Broxbourne Borough Council has issued a statement regarding the Delta Marriott Hotel.
In view of the recent High Court ruling in favour of Epping Forest District Council’s temporary injunction to stop a hotel in Epping being used to accommodate asylum seekers, Broxbourne Council will now take legal advice as a matter of urgency about whether it could take similar action.
The Council has opposed the use of the Delta Marriott for this purpose from the outset but was advised that action was unlikely to be successful at that time.
The Council recently wrote to the Government seeking confirmation that they would honour their pledge to end the use of hotels.
Councillor Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Council, said:
The placement of asylum seekers at the Delta Marriott hotel is inappropriate. The Delta Marriott should be used for its intended purpose as a hotel. Its on-going use as asylum seeker accommodation adds pressure to local services and risks heightening community tensions.
We will consider all legal options to prevent this and continue to press for a long-term solution that works for our residents.
Broxbourne Council’s Leader is also writing to the Home Office seeking an assurance that no asylum seekers from the Bell Hotel in Epping will be moved to Cheshunt.
