Broxbourne Council has today received confirmation that all asylum seekers have now left the Delta Marriott Hotel in Cheshunt and the site is no longer being used to accommodate asylum seekers.
The Council has opposed the use of the hotel for this purpose since December 2022, consistently raising concerns over the loss of a valued community asset, the impact on local residents and the additional pressure placed on local services.
Over the past three years, the Council has continued to press the Government for the arrangement to come to an end. This included direct representations to Ministers, seeking legal advice and preparing enforcement action in relation to the unauthorised change of use.
Councillor Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Borough Council, said:
I welcome the confirmation that the Delta Marriott Hotel is no longer being used to accommodate asylum seekers.
The Council has consistently maintained that the hotel should return to its intended use and has worked tirelessly to ensure residents’ concerns were heard at every level of Government.
I very much hope that a lawful hotel use will resume in the near future as this would create local jobs and be generally beneficial to the local economy.
I would like to thank local residents for their patience throughout this period. Bringing this arrangement to an end has remained a priority for myself and for the Council and I am pleased that this matter has now been resolved.
