The Opportunities for Excellence award scheme returned this year to support elite athletes across the Borough.
The eighteen recipients represent a wide range of sports, including kayaking, cricket, rugby union, football, street dancing, gymnastics, go karting, athletics, hockey, and golf. The scheme supports athletes at a county, national, or even international standard.
The award scheme was open to athletes of all ages living in Broxbourne, with successful applicants receiving a year’s free access to the Council’s leisure centres.
Awarded athletes can access swimming pools, gym equipment, and a variety of other facilities to help them progress on their sporting journey.
Recipients in the last few years have been recognised for competing in a broad range of sports, including judo, canoeing, athletics, and even top-tier women’s football.
Councillor Pierce Connolly, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said:
These eighteen athletes are a shining example of the talent that Broxbourne continues to produce. As they progress in their respective sport, they represent the communities, the clubs, and the coaches across our Borough that have backed them from day one.
The Opportunities for Excellence scheme is an important way for the Council to recognise and encourage talented local athletes who are dedicating themselves to competing at a high level.
The deadline for the next round of Opportunities for Excellence applications is 31 March 2027.
