Council Tax Reduction and Benefits Scams

During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis in the UK there has been an increase in the number of scams conducted

Callous individuals are targeting vulnerable people who unknowingly end up giving them money or sensitive information. Most recently, there have been reports from across the Borough of a scam email designed to appear as one from Broxbourne Borough Council or the Government informing recipients of a council tax reduction and reimbursement of overpayments.

Residents are advised that under no circumstances will Broxbourne Council send out an email instructing them to click on a link in order to claim a refund, and the Council also doesn't send text messages advising that a credit is due.

In the event of an overpayment, the Council will always write to individuals to advise them of this and to provide information on the steps that must be taken to claim money back. This letter will include the customer’s council tax reference number.

The Benefits and council tax teams can also be contacted directly via email at counciltax@broxbourne.gov.uk or benefits@broxbourne.gov.uk.
