Working together

If the Council has a duty to you, the housing service will work out a plan that describes what you have to do and what the Council has to do to assist you. This is called a Personalised Housing Plan or PHP.

If the Council accepts a homeless duty to your household you may be offered temporary accommodation. The Council has a limited amount of accommodation and the majority of accommodation has shared facilities such as kitchens and bathrooms. Some offers of temporary accommodation are outside of Broxbourne. While in temporary accommodation you will be expected to look for your own settled accommodation such as private rented regularly.

You will made aware of your housing pathway, which will include private rented accommodation. The offer of accommodation may be outside of the Borough of Broxbourne, and each case will be assessed before an offer is made. This is due to the limited amount of social housing in the borough and the high demand for it.

If you are made an offer of accommodation this will be a one and only offer and if you refuse the homeless duty owed to you may be discharged.

If the Council does not have to provide a place for you to live, it will still help by giving you a list of places you can contact. The Council has a limited number of places in hostels. Some of the places you may be offered will be outside the local area. Other options for you are:

  • YMCA hostels - the two nearest are in Bishops Stortford and Welwyn Garden City
  • renting a room in a shared house
  • privately rented accommodation
