The Council has duties which are set out in Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 towards households who are threatened with homelessness or homeless. This legislation places duties on Local Authorities to focus on preventing homelessness at an earlier stage and supporting those already homeless for 56 days to relieve their homelessness.
You could be “threatened with homelessness” if:
- Are likely to become homeless in 56 days
- Leaving a residential setting (for example, leaving prison, hospital or other care services)
- Have received a valid notice to quit from your landlord (for example, a section 21 or section 8 notice)
- Have received a notice of seeking possession, and the notice expires within the next 56 days
If you are at risk of homelessness within the next 56 days, you should make attempts to prevent your homelessness yourself if possible. There is further information below on specific situations. If unable to prevent your homelessness please complete the first contact form and a member of the Councils housing service will contact you.
You could be “homeless” if:
- You have no accommodation available to occupy
- Are at risk of violence or domestic abuse
- Have accommodation but it is not reasonable to continue to occupy it (for example, unsafe or in poor condition, overcrowded or a refuge)
- Have accommodation but cannot secure entry to it
- Have no legal right to occupy the accommodation
- Live in a mobile home or houseboat but have no place to put it or live in it
